Oral Surgery
Whether you are getting a tooth extracted or having an in-depth procedure done that involves other issues with your teeth or jawbone, it’s important to understand what you should do before and after oral surgery.
How to Prepare for Oral Surgery
The night before your surgical procedure, you want to make sure you have nothing to eat or drink after midnight. The dentist might give you medication that will help you relax and sleep better. Arrange for transportation since you likely won’t be able to drive home. Get a supply of soft foods that you can eat once you’re home, such as pudding or Jell-O. With most oral surgeries, you won’t be able to drink out of a straw because it can dislodge any blood clots that form.
Sedation and Anesthesia
There are a few different types of sedation methods when it comes to oral surgery, depending on the procedure. If you’re getting a tooth pulled, then nitrous oxide is often administered through a mask. If the procedure will be lengthy or complex, then the dentist might give you anesthesia so that you’re asleep. Your vital signs will be carefully monitored throughout the surgery. Anesthesia enables the dentist to give you pain medication through an IV line to keep you comfortable until you can go home.
